YARDSALE HEART SELF RELEASE WATERCOLOURS

Locals Yardsale Heart are a family band: Vocalist/guitarist Belinda Peters is married to drummer James Peters (who also plays drums for The Jons), and bassist Lizzie Peters is James' sister. Keyboardist/guitarist Charlie Rodriguez is also in The Jons, which makes him sort of related as well. All that family love translates into bright and nostalgic pop songs that blend new wave with desert rock—the kind of guitar-rock that sounds like monsoon raindrops falling on caliche—with a twist of surf guitar.

Mexico-raised musicians might not be the typical suspects behind an American power-pop rock band.

But that's exactly what Yardsale Heart is, with three members hailing from Nogales and one from Hermosillo.

James Peters - drummer for the local rock group The Jons - formed the group last February with vocalist and guitarist Belinda Peters, 23. The couple married about a year earlier. Belinda Peters was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, but moved to Tucson and graduated from Tucson High Magnet School.

Bass player and sister Lizzy Peters, 27, joined the group after returning from teaching English in Spain for four years.

Best friend, guitarist and electronic guru Charlie Rodriguez, 32, also from The Jons, completes the group.

"It's a family band," said James Peters. " My wife, my sister, and Charlie has always been like a brother."

James Peters has constructed quite the musical résumé: The Jons, which he formed with local pianist and then-childhood neighbor Sergio Mendoza; punk bands in high school; backing Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers in Rocky Point; and playing percussion with Gabriel Sullivan and the Taraf de Tucson.

"I've done this, I've done this, but now let's do this," the 32-year-old said about stepping outside of his musical box to form Yardsale Heart.

"I've always liked pop, but this is by far the pop-iest band I've been a part of," he said during an interview at his practice studio (turned recording studio, turned house for him and his wife).

"Our life revolves around our equipment. We just happen to sleep in the corner," he said.

Peters said the original idea was to create a heavier rock group like My Bloody Valentine, but once they started writing and playing, the group took on a sound of its own.

"We weren't trying to create any sound in particular," Peters said. "We just started playing, and this is the sound that came out of us."

Belinda Peters writes a majority of the songs, and the band completes, arranges and fills in each one until they achieve the big-band sound.

Yardsale Heart's debut album, "Watercolours," gets an official release on Saturday at Plush, 340 E. Sixth St.

The 11-track album begins with the title track, which sets the electro-upbeat rock sound that carries throughout the album and also gives an idea of how powerful and calming Belinda Peters' voice can be.

But it does vary and evolve throughout.

The third track, "So Strong," has a horn-driven big-band sound, and "F.U.R" is an instrumental electronic creation that Rodriguez put together on his iPad.

The album even wraps up with the Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale," which frontman Lou Reed gave the band permission to cover.

But the standout track is the second-to-last, "Yardsale Heart," a song written by Peters' friend and frontman for the local group Lenguas Largas, Isaac Reyes.

Peters liked the song and concept behind it so much (proven by the 282 plays on his iTunes) that he named the band after it. The song is about a used heart that doesn't feel worthy of another's love but finally finds a "yard sale heart, just like mine."

Eight of the 11 tracks were recorded in the couple's house with help from producer Josh Harrison. Jim Waters recorded the other three at his Waterworks Recording West.

Saturday's show will be the band's fifth live performance. Peters said a tour should be in the works soon.
